Have the fire-extinguishing systems been tested and do they have an approval from the insurance companies?

Salgromatic Aerosol technology and fire-extinguishing systems have been successfully tested around the world by several different organizations and independent testing laboratories. Many of those tests are completed in the United States, which Ministry of Defence is also one of the biggest aerosol technology users. Salgromatic aerosol technology has been certified worldwide and it is recommended fire suppression method and extinguishing system by a many insurance companies.

What is inside the extinguishing unit and does it have to be maintained?

Inside the aerosol-extinguishing unit (aerosol generator) is a harmless substance in a solid form, which is a completely non-toxic mixture of different chemicals. It does not spoil and it is virtually maintenance-free. Extinguishers are safe to transport and handle because they are non-pressurized units where extinguishing aerosol begins to develop only after the solid substance is activated and the combustion reaction starts.

What is Salgromatic Aerosol?

Salgromatic aerosol is a fire-extinguishing agent, which is formed as a result of the combustion reaction of solid substance in the Salgromatic extinguishing unit, including mainly nitrogen and various gases, water vapor and small solid particles.

How does it put down the fire, by removing oxygen?

Extinguishing mechanism of Salgromatic aerosol is unique as it is both, chemical as well as physical. It does not remove the oxygen, but the aerosol particles are attached to flame carrier atoms (free radicals) and breaks the chain reaction. The extinguishing agent also absorbs heat from the fire by dropping down its temperature below the level where the fire reaction cannot continue.

What is the service life of the systems and how do they withstand cold and different climatic conditions?

The fire extinguishing units are designed to withstand 10 years in extreme conditions where operating temperatures may vary between -50 – +60°C. Under normal/good conditions the service life can be extended up to 15-20 years.

What is aggressive environment?

Aggressive environment is a space or place (environment) where the variables such as variations in temperature, humidity, dirt, vibration or corrosion are highly affecting the fire-extinguishing system and its components.

Is extinguishing aerosol harmful to humans or whether its installable in occupied space?

Extinguishing aerosol is classified as a low hazard substance and naval air warfare center in the United States has investigated that exposure of 5-10 minutes to aerosol does not cause permanent health risks. Salgromatic Aerosol does not contain chlorine or bromide, and does not form aggressive halogen acids or hydrogen fluorides in contact with flames or hot surfaces. The extinguishing aerosol also does not displace oxygen in the protected space. Extinguishing systems are not recommended for installation in occupied spaces because dissolution of light gaseous agent reduces visibility in the protected space.

Does extinguishing aerosol cause damage to electrical equipment of other materials?

Salgromatic Aerosol is safe for electrical equipment, computers and electronics. It does not corrode, oxidize or damage the materials and even the post-cleaning is not always needed.

Can a fire-extinguishing unit be mounted in any position/orientation?

Yes, as long as the orientation is not affecting the aerosol forming capability, discharge pattern and distribution in protected space.

How aerosol reacts to electrical fires and arcs?

There applies the same physiology as for other fire types. When the aerosol is biting into the heat/fire reaction the arc will broke. The extinguishing aerosol is electrically non-conductive up to 75,000 volts, depending on temperature and climatic conditions.

How aerosol-extinguishing units are permissible and safe to transport?

Aerosol-forming chemical belongs in the group of flammable substances category and the products should be packed in accordance of packing group III / 3 (low hazard materials) by using plastic bags and cardboard or other suitable packaging materials. All fire-extinguishing units and associated components are approved to transport in all freight types/methods.

What kind of spaces the extinguishers and systems can protect?

Salgromatic systems are ideal for a wide range of “total flooding” as well as “direct to source” applications. Only limitation in total flooding applications may be such facilities and halls where the room heights exceeds 5 meters and in where the placing of the extinguishing units in the lower sections of the space is difficult. The limiting factors may also occur in some spaces containing many unclosable openings where fire-extinguishing aerosol can leak out too much despite the special arrangements.

Is the extinguishing system suitable for homes, and whether the installation can be carried out by yourself?

Yes. We offer a wide range of automatic fire extinguishing systems/units in different sizes, which can protect for example boiler rooms, main electrical panels and fuse boards. An authorized person or installation company must carry out the installation.

How the extinguishing aerosol affects the environment?

Extinguishing aerosol has no impact on the environment. Aerosol consists mainly of natural components of air so the fire suppression takes place absolutely environmental friendly. Salgromatic extinguishing systems are real green technology because their ingredients do not contribute the greenhouse effect or the destruction of the ozone layer, nor the aerosol does not have any lifetime in the atmosphere. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved aerosol the official replacement for Halon.

How the fire-extinguishing system detects a fire and how it is activated?

Fire extinguishing units themselves are automatically activated by the effect of heat but in most of the cases the systems are designed to use automatic/manual electronic activation, which is carried out through appropriate fire detectors and control electronics.

How much maintenance the system requires?

Fire extinguishing units do practically require very little or in some cases no maintenance at all. Visual inspection and checking the integrity of electrical activation circuit of the unit is usually enough. Recommended maintenance/inspection interval of extinguishing system entity varies depending on detection devices and ancillary components, as well as the conditions in operating environment. Under normal conditions the systems should be inspected in once a year.

What is meant by the holding time?

The holding time means a time period where the fire suppressing concentration of extinguishing agents shall be maintained in the protected space.

Why Salgromatic is better than traditional gas extinguishing systems?

The extinguishing capacity of Salgromatic aerosol is many times higher compared with traditional gas extinguishants and it is also much more safer for humans. In addition, MAG systems are easy and quick to install and require no piping, nozzles, pressurized cylinders or structural changes in the protected space. Is aerosol fire extinguishing system better than water sprinkler or water fog systems?

Systems are more like mutually supporting and are therefore not directly comparable with each other. Both are excellent in their own operating environments. Usually it does not make sense to protect with aerosol such large/public spaces like as water but the aerosol have access in places what water cannot reach and it will not cause further damage. Water, in many cases, paralysis the entire company’s operations and production may be interrupted for the extended period of time.

Is extinguishing system always independent equipment or can it be connected as a part of building technology?

Our fire detection and extinguishing systems can be used as separate and independent fire suppression equipment or they can be integrated into part of the building technology or a part of the broader security/fire alarm system. Intelligent control panels allow the efficient and reliable management for ventilation, fire dampers and smoke extraction equipment, as well as other components and systems. Can the extinguishing system be connected to fire alarm system of our property? If yes, who will do it?

Connections and possible programming to fire alarm equipment must only be carried out by an authorized person how is in charge of a fire alarm system. The systems can also be equipped with different wireless alarm transmission devices, wherein the system status information can be transferred for example to remote host or another client defined destination.

Is it possible to get alarm signal from a single system/extinguishing unit that it has been activated?

Yes. Where the fire detection and activation of the system is electrical the potential free contact information can be provided. Normally open contact information can be provided even if the system will not have any control electronics by using the special detection cable designed for this particular purpose.

What things are taken into account in the system design?

What is meant by the protection principle of the system?

System protection principle refers to the type of fire extinguishing system. This means a targeted release of the extinguishing agent in large spaces to the areas where the expected fire risk is located, however in such a way that the aerosol discharge is enough to fill the entire space with the minimum design concentration. What is design concentration and what does it mean? Design concentration is a design factor, which means the mass of solid aerosol-forming composition per m3 of enclosure volume required to achieve the fire suppressing concentration in the protected space.
